ECT
Electroconvulsive therapy

ECT is the administration of a mild controlled current of electricity through the brain which causes a seizure or fit. The electricity is given under a general anaesthetic and with a muscle relaxing drug so there is very little movement of the body. This form of treatment is used mainly to treat severe depressive illness.
